This page has all the quick links and info you need when volunteering with CowleyRoad.org.

History Makers

History Makers help out at events, assisting people who feel less tech-confident by scanning and uploading their photos & memories.

Here's what to do, step by step:

  1. See upcoming event dates and sign up to help out
  2. Create an account on the wiki
  3. Bring something to take pictures with, and something you can use to upload them (smartphone/ camera & laptop/ scanner & laptop etc).
  4. During the event/s, Photograph/scan/write down the contributions brought in by members of the public, and take down their details using the paper forms provided.
  5. Email the images/stories to archive@ email address OR Upload images/text to the wiki yourself, filling in the correct name/address/copyright details. See the Volunteer cheat sheet for how-to instructions.

Archive Librarians

Archive Librarians upload content which is emailed in by members of the public or contributed during events, and make sure that content in the archive is added to the right pages so it can be enjoyed and understood by people browsing the wiki.

Here's what to do, step by step:

  1. Create an account on the wiki
  2. Decide how long you'd like to commit for, and how often you'd like to check the wiki/emails, so that it feels manageable & rewarding. (Perhaps work to a personal goal of the number of contributions you'd like to process, for a sense of achievement when you reach it.)
  3. Check the archive@ email account for content which has been emailed in by members of the public. You may need to reply & chase up essential details before the content is useable (image date, copyright holder's name & copyright license, and address of the photo if not obvious from the image).
  4. Once essential details have been received from the copyright holder, upload the content to the wiki with correct details.
  5. Add any captions or explanatory text you think the images need. See the How to contribute page for how-to guide.
  6. There is also an additional, ongoing job of checking the collection of images which have been uploaded, but not yet added to any pages. These need to be inserted into the relevant wiki page/s, or deleted if they are duplicates. See the How to contribute page for how-to guide.
  7. Optional extra: if you're interested in curating your own collection/s on the wiki around themes that interest you (eg, food shops, or LGBT history) this is something you can do too.
